Merchant Jepsen’s three-storey house was one of the most imposing private buildings in Sønderborg. Like most of the buildings in the vicinity of the Town Hall, the house was badly damaged; the damage compensation ran to 15,850 Rixdollars, which was the highest compensation sum paid out. Despite the fact that the building was burnt out, a lot of brickwork remained standing, so the ruin was a favourite subject for photographers, and along with the Town Hall probably appears on more photos of Sønderborg in ruins than any other building.
