Sønderborg’s old Town Hall dated back to the end of the 16th century, and was topped by a very distinctive spire. It is said that the German artillerymen used the spire as a sighting point, so the Town Hall was one of the first buildings to be hit. It caught fire late in the evening of 2 April, and burnt down completely in the course of the night. The damage was assessed at 12,000 Rixdollars, the next highest compensation sum paid out after the bombardment.

The Town Hall was rebuilt to the same design and using materials from the old walls, and was inaugurated in 1866. It was pulled down in the early 1930s and replaced by the present Town Hall.
