This street, which in 1864 was called Brændte Gade, was almost out of range of the Prussian guns during the bombardment in the first weeks of April, but even so, their balls and shells hit targets here, and most of the inhabitants found it wisest to leave the street. Even the steadfast Second Lieutenant Laurits Lassen thought it best in the end to withdraw to the northern part of the town.
