The Castle was the first building to be hit when the Prussian batteries on Broager opened fire over Vemmingbund on 2 April. During the following weeks of shelling, the Castle took a few hits, but it was the town, not the Castle, the Prussians were aiming at. The Castle roof suffered quite a lot of damage, but the thick walls stood firm, and the Castle staff prevented the outbreak of fire.
Today, the only sign of the damage suffered by the Castle is a Prussian shell bricked in on the western external wall on a level with the top row of windows.
